Gulliver’s Travels, freely adapted and loosely based

Gulliver’s Travels is given a 21st century touch up in Rob Letterman’s 2010 comedy of the same name. The film stars Jack Black, Jason Segel, Billy Connolly, Emily Blunt and Amanda Peet in this loosely based comedic adaptation Jonathan Swift’s classic story.

A giant in Lilliput

Set in modern day New York, Lamuel Gulliver (Jack Black, the voice behind Po in Kung Fu Panda) heads the mail room of a New York newspaper and although he likes to talk, he cannot actually speak out when it really matters. However, when newcomer Dan (T.J Miller from She’s Out of My League) gets promoted over him, one day into the job, he tries to pull himself together by talking to Darcy Silverman (Amanda Peet), the newspaper’s travel editor – which has had a crush on for 5 years. Unfortunately, he loses it and makes up some notion of wanting to become a travel writer. He also falsifies his travel adventures by plagiarising from Frommer’s and Time Out which lands him the task of going to the Bermuda Triangle and writing about the legends and its secrets. During the trip her runs into a storm and ends up in Lillput, and that’s when the fun begins.

Swift loyalists must accept the fact that this film, although bearing the same title and similar plot, has been very loosely adapted by the creative team of Joe Stillman and Nicholas Stoller. Sure enough, there are resonance of Percy Jackson & the Lighting Thief, especially the free adaptation of and modernization of classics.

Jason Segel who portrays Horatio, Gulliver’s friend on Lilliput, reflects Gulliver is a much smaller term. When we first meet him he is imprisoned for looking at the Princess (Emily Blunt) whom he is secretly in love with. However, unlike his gigantic friend, he has the will to act but the inability to talk and together they teach other about what it takes to be big.

There are many laughs in the film like when Gulliver puts out the castle fire by pissing on it or when the town’s people re-enact scenes from films like Star Wars and Titanic, all the while thinking it is Gulliver’s life.

This lose adaptation should be considered as a cinematic version of Swift’s story but a more freely adapted comedy, and will guarantee you a travel unlike any other you’ve experienced.

Fact: Virginity cannot be confirmed with urine test; only pregnancy can. Besides, the quality of your urine is determined by your water intake - the more water you drink, the cleaner and clearer your urine will be.





Myth #7: A girl who has done it before has "a certain kind of look" on her face.


Fact: This is what many guys would say, and it is purely nonsense. Common sense tells you that there is no such thing as the virgin or non-virgin look!





Myth #8: A girl will definitely bleed when she has sex for the first time. If she doesn't, then she is lying about being a virgin.


Fact: One of the more reasonbale points brought up, this is perhaps the most common excuse for determining whether one is a virgin, but it is a misconception. Bleeding occurs when the hymen, a thin menbrane that covers the opening of a female's vagina, tears during intercourse. Thus, the general belief is that bleeding indicates loss of virginity. However, the hymen could also tear through physical activities like cycling and excessive exercises (like in the case of gymnasts). If tampons are not used corectly, they can also break the hymen. Also, some girls don't bleed after their first intercourse because they have more flexible hymens. Therefore, non-bleeding doesn't mean girls are non-virgins, either.





Sound Advice: Take these claims with a pinch of salt. These so-called facts are either traditional folktales or the output of someone's highly imaginative mind. In short, ignore all the outrageous things people say about how they can tell if a girl is a virgin. The truth is, no physical change will take place when a female (or male) loses their virginity. Only a medical check-up can confirm virginity by affirming the presence of an intact hymen. A thorough check-up can also tell whether the hymen has been torn by a penetrating penis or from falling from a bicycle. Other than that, the only way is to ask, and hope for an honest answer.
